[Make-It Monday] DIY Jewelry Hanger Using Bobby Pins

Monday, October 06, 2014

Heya folks! Thought I'd do a real simple one today that uses the things that you probably already have in your house. I think the best DIYs are the ones that transform everyday objects into something totally different and not ugly! This jewelry hanger is super self explanatory, and the best part is it uses bobby pins as hooks!

So les get dis partay started shall we?

Canvas - Dollarama
Bobby Pins - Walmart
Pliers - My dad's toolbox LOL,
you can usually find some in any hardware or art supplies sections
Mod Podge Glue - Walmart
Washi Tape - Homesense

Supplies you need:

  • New or used small to medium canvas
  • Magazines/pictures/newspaper/etc.
  • Plain ol' scissors
  • Glue
  • Regular bobby pins
  • Pliers
  • Washi Tape

Alright, you've done it at least once in elementary school, go ahead and make a pretty collage on your canvas. In effort to keep it short and sweet (and interesting), I'm not gonna talk you through making a picture collage, but it should look something like this when you're done!

To make the hooks:

I'm super bad at explaining things like this, so bear with me and really rely on the picture haha! So you're gonna hold the bobby pin between the pliers like shown above, making sure that it's pinching the front and back of the pin and not the sides. You know you're doing it right if you can't see through the pin when holding the pliers upright.

With a strong, even grip, bend the bobby pin to create a dipping U-shape, aka a hook shape. The bobby pin should not split open and still be more or less flat when laid on a flat surface.

It took me a couple tries to get it perfect, but you'll get the hang of it. Make as many as you desire, I made five. You can also use paint to cover the black colour, but once you hang jewelry on them you'll hardly notice them.

Glue on the hooks in the positions that you like. The Mod Podge was enough for the hooks to stay up, but you can also use a glue gun if you need to.

Finish it off with some washi tape to cover the sides! You can also use paint or extend the collage to the sides.

I used wooden knobs from Jo-Ann's for the other two jewelry hangers.

Someone better press that Staples button, because ohhh man that was too easy!
